. cnn "newsroom" with carol costello begins right now. good morning, carol. >>> good morning. thank you so much for being with us. i'm carol costello. new flashpoint in the isra israel/gaza conflict threatens to implode today's peace talks. a bomb rips apart a bus in tel aviv, israel's second largest city. 22 people injured and tensions rise again across the region. hamas praises the attack. it's not claiming responsibility. in gaza, streets are empty as civilians brace for the israeli response. so far, secretary of state hillary clinton, the challenge of brokering a cease fire, it grows even more daunting this morning. more on those diplomatic efforts in a minute. first the latest details on that bus attack. sara sidner is on the phone from tel aviv. what's the latest, sara? >> reporter: where the victims of this bus attack are. we know that now 22 people have been injured. some of those were inside the bus, some of the people were outside of the bus. there are two very serious injuries, both of them teenagers according to hospital officials here and they are doing surgery as we speak.

official telling cnn that israel has agreed to the general terms but rejected the timing. hamas conditions, according to an official, are this. stop the air operation, air assaults and want the ground crossings, blockades to be opened up immediately. according to this hamas official israel is saying, okay, we'll stop the air operation but the ground crossings and blockade, we would like to do that gradually. that seems to be the sticking point right now. if you listen to egyptian and hamas officials, some optimism. israeli officials in tel aviv seem to be more cautious when it comes to describing any kind of progress in these talks. >> the rhetoric still coming from egypt is interesting, to say the least. this is a statement from egypt's president. he referred to, quote, the travesty of israel's aggression. not exactly the words of a peace maker. what does that say about the fragility of this cease fire? >> reporter: well, i think we should look beyond rhetoric. what's happening in egypt is interesting. because the public is applying pressure on this post-revolution government led by moham

in gaza which has been considerable. you've seen that on cnn. and also relieves suffering of the israeli population. second, it does give the israelis an opportunity to see if hamas is credible. if hamas will meet the test of a calm period and in effect hold to a cease-fire and not fire rockets into israel proper much less to a place like jerusalem where hamas tried to attack today. third, it gives secretary clinton time to fly from cambodia, as she's doing now, and to arrive on scene and it may be at secretary clinton will really be the glue that holds this altogether and her presence, especially with the israelis, might give them the confidence to proceed with a formal cease-fire. >> how so? she's meeting with the palestinian authority president abbas, who has nothing to do with hamas, has nothing to do with the gaza strip. and to some people, the west bank, has lost a lot of credibility over the years. >> well, she'll also be meeting with prime minister netanyahu, and he'll be meeting with mohamed morsi of egypt. morsi the key mediator, trying to bring the cease-fire together. of cour

"cnn newsroom" continues with ashleigh banfield. >>> hello, everyone. i am ashleigh banfield. it is 11:00 on the east coast and 8:00 on the west coast and it is 6 p.m. in jerusalem where air raid sirens have been blaring within the past hour. jerusalem, not tel aviv. authorities are reporting that hamas rockets hit outside of that city. this is huge. it is the first time since 1970 that rockets have been fired at jerusalem. this new escalation, that's according to the newspaper in israel, but this new escalation comes after a failed cease-fire between the israelis and the palestinians earlier today. israel had said that it held off the bombing for two hours because egypt's prime minister was inside gaza meeting with hamas leaders and the palestinians for their part are denying that. they're disputing it. this week's fighting we know this has left more than 200 people injured. three israeli soldiers are dead, there are reports of civilian israelis dead as well and 24 palestinians killed in gaza and israel is amassing tanks near the border with gaza and cal

it down and captured one of the pilots. this is amateur film. a cnn crew was just on the scene after the crash. rebels saying they also shot down a government helicopter yesterday. that captured on video. take a look. an opposition group posted its facebook page that the free syrian army brought down the helicopter with an anti aircraft weapon. we don't know what happened to the people who were actually on board that helicopter. we want to go straight to washington to listen to the president. he's now making a statement with middle class families talking about the importance of reaching a deal and not going over the so-called fiscal cliff. let's listen in. >> it would be good for our children's future and i believe that both parties can agree on a framework that does that in the coming weeks. in fact, my hope is to get this done before christmas. but the place where we already have, in theory at least, complete agreement, right now, is on middle class taxes. and as i've said before, we've got two choices. if congress does nothing, every family in america ll see their tacks automatica

. certainly, i mean, if you listen, for instance, to what ehud barack, the israeli defense minister told cnn yesterday, he essentially said that we want to put an end once and for all to the firing of missiles from gaza into israel, and there's no other way to do that logically than to go in and not only smash hamas's military capabilities, but to smash it as an organization, and, frankly, that's a fairly tall order. that's what they tried to do in 2008, 2009. it didn't really work. in fact, hamas was only more entrenched in power in gaza after that, so i think we're looking ahead to some very difficult days certainly for the people of gaza and for the people of southern israel. >> let's -- more than 400 rockets have been fired into israel from gaza since this operation began, and you have the iron dome defense system intercepting at least a quarter of them. away do you make of the capabilities of both sides? >> certainly it's completely out of balance. i mean, israel is by far the most powerful military power m middle east compared to hamas, which, you know, can only man -- sort of field a
